Interview with Clémence

Originally from Toulouse, Clémence moved to England twenty years ago following her studies, settling in Exeter to pursue a career in her specialised field of Turkish and Kurdish studies. Clemence is currently a senior lecturer at the University of Exeter. When she arrived in England, Clémence had a sound understanding of British culture. She frequently visits her family living in London and it was London’s diverse blend of the contemporary and traditional that initially attracted her to country. Clémence reflects that she felt welcomed upon her arrival and found it easy to fit in to the British way of life. Unfortunately, her husband at the time did not share this same experience, as he faced exclusion when he arrived here. Clémence occasionally misses the French landscape and the views but considers Exeter home. Occasionally she finds comfort in finding the things she misses from home in Exeter, such as good bread! Although she has not looked to be a part of specific French communities here in Exeter, Clémence is an active member of the local community, where she actively participates in access to food initiatives. The nature of her job means she has established Turkish and Kurdish connections here too. She is very fond of Exeter and feels proud to be a part of a multicultural city. Clémence enjoys her life here. Whilst she doesn’t have any plans to move back to France, she does feel anxious about the impact Brexit will have on her future.
