Leandro is originally from Uberlândia, Brazil, which he described as being right in the middle of Brazil, “similar to the midlands” in the UK. Since moving to the UK 17 years ago, he has lived in Ireland, London, Leicester, Coventry, Leamington Spa and now in Ottery St. Mary, Devon. He lives there with his wife, 2 kids and a dog, but also has a son in Brazil. He is a full-time pharmacist and gives evening classes in Capoeira, a Brazilian martial art. Throughout his time in the UK, he has connected with various communities, including many Brazilian communities, which he has helped to bring together through public events, for example “Brazilian day”. At the beginning of the interview, we discussed the origins and significance of Capoeira for Leandro. Capoeira is a martial art, which originally came with the slaves from Africa to Brazil and was used by them as a way of fighting back against the captains of the Portuguese colonist regime, and exists still until today as a part of Brazilian culture. Leandro then goes on to describe how Capoeira was influential in helping him to move to England, as he had an opportunity to complete projects with the Brazilian art. Despite this, he has never been able to work full-time with Capoeira and it has predominantly been just a hobby for him. Having said that, a good portion of the interview referred to Capoeira and this shows how big an influence it is for Leandro.
